Over on the 'other' rumor board. AI details how a user who ordered a single core mini, got a pleasant upgrade to a dual core, 100GB HD and most importantly a superdrive.

Why give us a 100GB HD and a superdrive on the most basic machine, because they want us to have plenty of space for the movie downloads and there will be an option to burn these files to DVD.

Couple this with a widescreen ipod, released now and a nano possibly later but with a screen comparable to current 5Gen. That way they get maximum coverage for the new movie store ie. all models play video and anyone prepared to buy the 6G out of the way before they introduce the new nano.

Its a common tactic of the industry to release the highend model first where it potentially is in competition with lower models. Last years nano and 5G where so far apart, there wasn't a worry about releasing the junior model first.

    M.

Wasn't a silent upgrade. Apple bollocksed up the order.

these obviosly gonna be optimizd for the full screen ipod, whats wrong with avi format anyway.

The fact that it isn't a "format," for starters.

$10 ~ $15, if that is the price for anything below a 720p encoding of a movie, would be the stupidest thing that Apple has done. (Well, at least in the last 10 years or so.)

If they do 720p encodes - and that would have to be the minimum, as they really should be 1080p - then they might have something worthwhile. The problem is, this will totally clash with the move to Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, so being realistic, my guess would be 480p encodes. Which, of course, then makes purchasing movies this way versus DVD a really stupid decision (IMHO).

I'd love to see Apple get this right, but... I'm really not holding my breath.

If my memory serves me correctly Conroe will not be pin compatible with Merom, is that right? I just can't remember what's what anymore. Old age.

As far as I know, the first generation Merom is pin-compatible with Yonah, the Core Duo mobile processor that is in the MacBook, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini at the moment. And if I'm not mistaken, Kentsfield will be pin-compatible with Conroe, which is not used in any Mac at the moment.

EDIT: But no, Conroe and Merom are not pin-compatible.

Yes, they should just just shut-up and vote for corporate-sponsored Republicrats or Converalabour every four or five years and take it.

It's a shame that there is no longer any meaningful democracy.

I think that's pretty accurate (well observed) whichever side of this particular fence people are sitting.

It this utter ignorance and false sense of security in the Mac user base that I would use to my advantage if I were a cyber-criminal. While I completely appreciate the lack of malware OSX has enjoyed thus far, I've seen more than enough evidence over the past few years to tell me that it's far from safe. The latest Safari/Webkit hacking contest result alone should be enough to cause any reasonable person to take notice. I think a few people will be changing their tunes the day the crap finally hits the fan.

For some reason, a certain famous quote from The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy about the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation comes to mind regarding certain people who will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.... ;)

So you're not a cyber-criminal, but there are many out there, yet they haven't used this "sense of security in the Mac user base" to their advantage, have they? The latest hacking contest (I assume you're referring to Pwn2Own 2011) resulted in Safari and IE 8 being hacked. A browser is not an OS. Note that Goggle Chrome came out with flying colors, yet one of its platforms - Windows - has been hacked many times.

Simply put, there are underlying vulnerabilities to Windows that do not exist with OS X. That said, the real dangers to your computer are how you use it. Don't have a password on your wireless router? Use easy-to-guess passwords on your online accounts? Never change your passwords? Use the same password on all your accounts? Visit porn sites a lot and download that stuff? Download movies illegally? Click on links in emails from people you don't know? Or, from those you do, don't look at the source to see if it's a valid link? Respond to emails telling you that your [fill in the blank] account has been temporarily disabled, and that you need to "verify" your information to reactivate it? If so to any of the above, you're asking for trouble, even if you do have AV software "protecting" you.

There are many security experts who do not use AV software. Steve Gibson http://www.grc.com is one of them. Why? They practice safe computing and use common sense. No amount of AV or Internet security software is going to protect people who practice unsafe computing.

We've been hearing about the crap hitting the fan for years, and will for years to come. Yawn.

So how soon should I expect to see a Merom in a MacBook? "Some months later," or "many months later" than it's appearance on a MacBook Pro? Why not sooner? Just to differentiate the product lines? I thought Merom would replace Yonah in general. I read one report suggesting Merom would be introduced at the same time as the Conroe official introduction near the end of this month.

BTW, Hannibal posted his opinion of Core 2 Duo on Ars, along with his opinion of most other reviewers:

    Hi munkery

Thank you for the helpful link. It explained a lot.

I was wondering why Linux and OSX are virus-resistant and the page you linked to explains it well.

The old "market share" argument didn't make sense to me because:

1- the fame associated with writing the first major Mac (or Linux) virus would be immense.

2- there's at least some hatred of Apple out there amongst the technically proficient. (geeks). I've met such a person..... Very smart, very pro-Linux and if you mention you like Macs or own one.... BOOM!
That guy and probably lots of others really, really hates Macs. If he could he'd take down Apple in an instant.

3- if the conspiracy theories are true, the AV companies and/or Microsoft would love to shatter Apple's image of invulnerability to viruses. Even if they aren't actively trying to develop one, they wouldn't mind it if someone else did.

Thanks to all for the insights,
    Keri

I'm a pretty serious Apple fanatic and I'm willing to scrap my family's iPhones because of this. I know the government can track me anyway by watching my movement across cell towers, but this is a huge affront to privacy.

If you tie this story to the recent news from Michigan that cops there are able to suck the data off of your phone at a traffic stop, then this is really frightening.

If this is your biggest worry on people being able to track you...hmph.

Tinfoil hats are going to be all the rage here soon.

Okay... I'm not quite done, you can get back to your whining in a moment.

See that area emphasized above? That's the exact thing that causes all our bickering in but the U.S. and the U.K.. The idea that somehow it's okay to violate contracts, laws or even social norms just because you agree with the reason for breaking said rules. If you have a problem with the rules, get them changed, until you do, obey them. There's a reason it's called "civilization" - we all have to be civil for it to work.

    Okay. Now I'm really done.

Actually, the Expo managers allowed them to have 2 people by the entrance giving out leaflets (that much is mentioned in the MacWorld article that has been quoted in this thread).

It transpires that they may have been thrown out for other reasons (berating other stallholders, and taking photos of children without permission). My beef was with the fact that the ORIGINAL story was Greenpeace being thrown out for giving out leaflets outside of its area, which PLENTY of others did too. Yet no-one has any evidence that these other parties were ejected also. It originally seemed like they wanted to make an example of Greenpeace above everyone else, which is what I had a problem with.

However, it transpires that more than just this may have happened yesterday, which is all well and good. If they did something more extreme, then they are deserving of their punishment (ie - they should have been thrown out). But giving out flyers to people away from their stall is NOT a good enough reason!!

"A taste of things to come" being said by Jobs at the same event as the release of a way to 'type' on an iPod with just the clickwheel

I don't think there would be a great need for a numpad if dialling, SMS, etc. can all be done from this wheel?

I currently believe that if one is on the way, it would look a lot more like the iPod video of today than we think.

Considering that the iTS is like the 5th biggest music vendor, they sure suck at selling movies. 125k is nothing compared to real movie vendors.

Maybe when they get more than 75 movies. Amazon unbox started with like 2000 movies!

Is that what they were doing? Well it wasn't clear. They need to fix that it's too confusing. It appears they are saying the current i5 is faster then the current i7.

Im a recent Mac User, research reveals the fact that AV companies are crying wolf about OSX being targeted by hackers since 2000 though.

What I do is scanning my Mail Downloads and Mail folder from time to time with ClamXAV, just to make sure no stupid Windows Trojans are taking up my precious HD Space.
Everything else is being solved with brain.app. Heck, ive even uninstalled Little Snitch, as it bogged down my system performance and its not needed if you know what you are doing with your system. I always keep my system up to date with the latest patches from Apple.

I'm saying that Africa will sort out it's own problems in time, when those individuals who recognize the problem for themselves get a voice. We can help, and every little bit helps, but it's not ours to fix. This is FAR FAR more complex and rooted than a kid who hurts his knee on a skateboard.
I don't think anyone, from Bono to me, thinks red iPods are a complete solution. Of course complex problems have complex solutions. And yet programs like the ones Red supports--which are not limited to education--help.

And speaking of cherrypicking, you left some things unaddressed :) I'm seeing a LOT more in your original post than just "we can't fix this alone." That much is true. But going on to say that Africans must be allowed to die so they can evolve and catch up is extreme and unreasonable.

It's always nice to find a reason not to make something "my problem." That's a great feeling. But I think you have gone in a pretty bad "us and them" direction with that.
