Agreed.
How can they sell a "cheap" iMac and a very expensive MP if they want large margins on their products? Shouldn't the iMac be at least 500$ more if that were the case?
And as for the "workstation" reality. I'm sure there are MP buyers that actually need Xeons over hex i7 chips. But how many. Really. Compared to the number of Mac users that want an iMac that has expansion slots.
Also, has anyone looked to the latest financials to see how many MPs have actually been sold? And how much money they gained by keeping that MP tax?
Loa
They can sell a cheap iMac because their costs are lower and crucially, that market is far larger, so they can "Make it up in volume." I would imagine that their financial analysis did not lead to a similar conclusion vis-a-vis the Mac Pro.
As to "workstation," It's Xeons because Xeons are the only way to get dual-CPU machines on the intel platform. really doesn't like overly complex product lines, so they don't want to split the Mac Pro off into a Xeon and non-Xeon configuration, having already split it off into dual and single processor lines. I imagine similar reasoning is keeping them from making the "X Mac", which is what you really seem to want.
Finally, does not release sales figures for different portions of their market - just "Portables," and "Desktops," so only they can answer that question, and they have not seen fit to do so.

and i thought i was the only one with "11 envy"
i bought the 13" ultimate to finally dump my 2009 15" MB Pro but even now i still wish i had an 11" ultimate. i bought for the best compromise between size and portability, but the 11" exemplifies the ultimate in portability and i wish i had one.
right now im trying to decide whether to buy the 11" MBA to compliment my 13" or to just go with an iPad and i'm currently leaning toward the iPad... but this thread now has me teetering the other direction again.
what i REALLY should do is go with the iPad and use what i'd save on a loaded 11" toward upgrading my desktop.
*sigh*

Welcome to Macrumors, it is like this all the time. Some weeks are worse then others. You just get used to it!
I know it's like this but I really do believe there is no iPhone, still it is fun to spur on the stupid and ignorant, that's what I come here for ;)
I think it's more of the fact people want it so badly that they are willing believe anything to support their beliefs.
Even bigfoot, the loch ness monster and UFOs left photos, the iPhone has shown off absolutely nothing for nearly 12 months worth of rumors, therefore no iPhone.
I can see it now..... iPhoney, Tricked Different

This could be very smart.
The accuracy of antenna-gps is not that good. So in a large city, you could be off 1 whole street. It just isn't accurate enough to position you where you are.
BUT if they make a database of signal strengths.. so they can calculate more precise where you are.... than it would be more useful.
The fact that there are no more than a hand full of different antennas in Apple iPhone line wil help this. Android could never do this, because the antenna of a samsung could work much better than from HTC.
Example:
10 people are logged on to the same antenna, but 5 of them have a weaker strength than the others... Now we know they are somewhere else. So if you record this for a long time.... you get a better map of antennas, signal strengths, and locations. It gets better by every call you make.
Its a lot of work, but a big selling point for not going cross platform.

No way will millions of copies be running at businesses. They'll be the last to upgrade from 2000/XP.
Remember, Vista ain't done 'til SP1! :)
Yep, there was a story in the paper last week about how the National Australia Bank (we're talking billions upon billions of dollars, they've got fingers in pots all over the world, massive corporation and they employ thousands) has only just got around to rolling out XP over the old 2000 Pro systems. They won't be looking to upgrade to Vista for a few years yet.
I dare say it's the same for most big business, they don't want to risk anything by upgrading to the latest and greatest until it's had years of real-world testing and updates.

The white iPhone is the "Good" model it only allows you to listen to nice tinkly music and play non-violent games and it will not record your location in a hidden file without your knowledge... unlike the "Evil" dark lord black iPhone, which knows where you live and is even now plotting your untimely demise - allegedly.

I really hope so. I'm on the same boat.

Hopefully this sets a precedent and other companies start following El Gato's lead here (and Sling for that matter). I don't have EyeTV but it would be great if DirecTV or U-Verse could do this. U-Verse seems so ripe for this kind of stuff since it's network-based anyway.

I'm quite sure Apple is targeting their computers to more than Christians.
The term 'Holiday Promotion' generally means a promotion that is available as early as Thanksgiving (since the day after Thanksgiving is considered the biggest shopping day of the year) and concludes on or about New Years Day.
So aside from Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day, there are several other 'holidays' in that time period.
By referring to that time as 'holidays' you cover any conceivable holiday held within that time period.. Kwanza, Hanukkah, etc.

I think the price is the biggest issue, did they not think we would think it should be at least as cheap if not cheaper than print. Hmm Why is this not flying?? Greed!! I hope they read these posts

I have this gut feeling Apple is holding back on features not implemented yet on purpose.Just like they held back on OS X running on Intel.
If Apple were to release some of those "secret" features to developers now Microsoft would have it too and possibly add similar features at the last minute.
I also believe Apple and Microsoft are working together on some stuff.
Vista Jan 30th
Leopard shown at MWSF and released in March.
Rosetta won't be visible on Intel machines in March.

That was the PCie x1900 (cut down version of the x1900xt available for the intel mac pro) as it only had 256mb ram.. iam not too sure how much further it was cut down, iam thinking it also had less pipelines than the MP version.
How is the x1900 better than those two? I am not looking for the best video card for a G5 Quad.. as I was pretty satisfied with the geforce 6800 256MB video card. Is the x1900 just as powerful, or is it similar to the Radeon 1900 XT from 2006 mac pro?

First, let me say that I think that there is a big issue with the iPhone 4 antenna, and I do think that Apple should do a recall (a voluntary one). I also think that Apple did a bad job handling the situation.
That being said don't you think that there was indeed a misrepresentation of the signal strength going in on with iOS 4.0 that was fixed with 4.0.1 that was exaggerating the problem? What if people that were able to go from 5 bars to 0 simply by touching the "forbidden place" were actually supposed to see 2/3 bars dropping to 0 instead?
Despite all the mistakes Apple made in this iPhone 4 snafu, I think it's fair that they address the fact that the problem was exaggerated by a misrepresentation of signal bars. (assuming that it's a fact)
What if you made a mistake and something made it look much worse than it is, wouldn't you want to show everyone that it's not as bad as it looked like? Even if it's your fault and that the mistake is still bad in itself?
